# Active Seniors & Retirees - Media and Partnership Research Brief

**Research cut-off:** 4 August 2026

**Status:** Public-source research record

**Privacy boundary:** This brief contains only public professional information, published media-kit material and strategic analysis. It excludes private correspondence, negotiated terms, meeting logistics and unverified personal claims.

## Executive summary

Active Seniors & Retirees is a quarterly New Zealand publication aimed at older readers, with distribution through Probus clubs, retirement villages, Clubs New Zealand, U3A groups, retail and online channels. Affinity Ads manages the commercial relationship around the publication. Public material identifies John Emmanuel as an advertising contact and Colin and Joan Gestro as publisher/editor contacts.

The publication offers a potentially useful channel for Seniors New Zealand to test practical, evidence-led content for older New Zealanders. The strongest opportunity is not reach alone. It is the combination of print visibility, a defined older audience, digital reuse and the related Seniors & Travel Expo network. Any proposal should clearly distinguish paid advertising, advertiser-supplied editorial and independent editorial coverage.

Audience and demographic figures in this brief are publisher-supplied unless another source is stated. They should not be described as independently audited reach.

## Public role map

### John Emmanuel

- Affinity Ads lists John as Sales Manager, although its team page spells his surname "Emanuel".
- The supplied 2026 media kit and Probus media-kit page use "John Emmanuel" and list him as an advertising contact.
- Affinity's public profile describes experience across IT, travel, pharmacy and wellbeing markets, including earlier media-planning, buying and advertising-management work.
- Public evidence supports an advertising and commercial-sales role. It does not establish that John owns, publishes or edits the magazine.

### Colin and Joan Gestro

- The 2026 media kit identifies Colin and Joan Gestro as Publisher/Editor contacts.
- Affinity Ads identifies Colin as Managing Director.
- Public magazine and Expo material connects the Gestros, Affinity Ads, Active Seniors & Retirees and the Seniors & Travel Expo network.

### Probus South Pacific

- Probus describes Active Retirees New Zealand as a national flagship Probus publication.
- Its current media-kit request page names Colin Gestro as the New Zealand advertising and partnership contact, while the supplied magazine kit names John Emmanuel as the advertising contact.
- Recent magazine credits say the publication is produced on behalf of Probus South Pacific Limited.

This creates an authority question rather than a contradiction to resolve by assumption. John is the immediate commercial gateway; Colin should be included when a proposal reaches publishing, Probus partnership or Expo decisions.

## Publication and distribution proposition

The 2026 media kit describes a quarterly publication with Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer issues. It positions the magazine around travel, health and wellbeing, finance, fitness, gardening, food, culture and retirement living.

Publisher-supplied distribution claims include:

- 149 Probus clubs with 12,600 members nationally.
- 142 retirement villages with 22,400 residents.
- 22 Clubs New Zealand clubs with 7,000 members.
- 32 North Island U3A clubs with 9,000 members.
- Retail sales through Whitcoulls, Paper Plus and airport shops.
- Online distribution to Seniors & Travel Expo visitors, Eldernet members and Age Concern members.

The media kit states national readership of 172,900 per issue, based on multiple readers per copy. The calculation, circulation base, duplication across channels and audit status are not provided in the visible 2026 kit and should be requested before using the number in ROI or public impact claims.

An older hidden layer in the supplied PDF states 43,225 print copies. The published readership claim is exactly four times that figure, suggesting a four-readers-per-copy multiplier. Neither the print figure nor the multiplier is visibly audited. The website, visible kit and older PDF layers also contain different Probus-member and village-resident totals, so a current delivery statement should supersede promotional copy.

## Published demographic claims

The media kit describes the readership as age 60+, 59% female and 41% male. It also reports high rates of investment holdings, home ownership among Probus members, vehicle use, travel and monthly health-professional visits.

These are marketing claims in a publisher-supplied media kit. The visible document does not provide sample sizes, field dates, survey instruments or an independent audit for those reader-demographic percentages. They are useful for discovery and media planning, but not as population statistics.

The public material is internally inconsistent about the reported investment threshold: the visible kit uses more than $400,000, while the current advertising page and older PDF layer use more than $200,000. Neither threshold should be used as an independently measured audience fact.

The kit separately cites New Zealand population projections, government investment statistics and an MSD business-of-ageing figure. The source descriptions are too general to reproduce those figures as verified official statistics without the underlying report, table and reference year.

Two supplied market claims can be more precisely framed from authoritative sources:

- Stats NZ reported median individual net worth of $433,000 for people aged 65 to 74 in 2021. It is a historical median individual wealth measure, not a current investment balance.
- The Office for Seniors' NZIER Business of Ageing 2026 update estimates consumer spending by people aged 65+ at $54.7 billion in 2024. It should be described as a 2024 modelled estimate published in 2026, not as $55 billion spent in 2026.

The kit's attributed statements that 76% of New Zealanders aged 50+ prefer print and 54% say print supports understanding could not be traced to the named March 2025 Roy Morgan source. Do not reproduce them until the publisher supplies the study, population, questions and sample.

## Advertising rates and production specifications

Public 2026 rates are per issue, exclude GST and exclude advertising-agency commission.

- Double-page spread: $7,920 casual; discounted multi-issue rates down to $6,944 for four editions.
- Full page: $5,071 casual; discounted multi-issue rates down to $3,994 for four editions.
- Half page, vertical or horizontal: $2,831 casual; discounted multi-issue rates down to $2,400 for four editions.
- Third page: $2,342 casual; discounted multi-issue rates down to $1,396 for four editions.
- Quarter page: $2,000 casual; discounted multi-issue rates down to $1,250 for four editions.
- Cover and prime-position loading: 15%.
- Inserts: $140 per thousand.

Key half-page specification:

- Horizontal: 175 mm wide by 115 mm high.
- Vertical: 85 mm wide by 234 mm high.
- No bleed and no keyline required.
- Supply PDF only, at 300 ppi/dpi, using CMYK or greyscale with fonts embedded.

The wider production notes set a 240% total ink-coverage limit, require 100% black for black body copy and ask suppliers to review overprint before delivery.

## Publication calendar

The public kit presents a quarterly Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer cycle, but the supplied PDF contains conflicting current and older production layers. No deadline should be relied on without a current written insertion order.

The insertion order should separately identify booking, copy, artwork, proof, correction, cancellation and publication dates.

## Editorial and disclosure boundary

Public magazine material indicates that some content can be supplied by advertisers and edited for reader relevance. A prospective partner should therefore establish which of the following applies to every placement:

- Paid display advertising.
- Advertiser-supplied or sponsored editorial, clearly disclosed.
- Independently commissioned editorial subject to the publisher's normal judgment.
- A combined commercial package with separate advertising and editorial components.

Editorial classification, disclosure, evidence requirements, proofing rights, headline control, image rights and digital reuse should be agreed in writing. Paid access should never be represented as independent endorsement.

## Seniors & Travel Expo network

The official public event name is Seniors & Travel Expo. The organiser's 2026 material describes Auckland and Bay of Plenty events covering travel, health, retirement living, finance, mobility, lifestyle products and community activities.

Verified 2026 dates were:

- Auckland, North Harbour Stadium: 28 February and 1 March 2026.
- Bay of Plenty, Mercury Baypark: 28 and 29 March 2026.

Both events have concluded. The official pages direct visitors to watch for 2027 information, but no 2027 Expo dates or locations were publicly confirmed at the research cut-off.

The Expo's claims of more than 50 exhibitors, more than 3,000 annual attendees and magazine-backed promotion are organiser-supplied and not independently audited in the reviewed sources.

The 2026 Expo prospectus identifies Colin Gestro as the owner/operator. A combined magazine, speaking or Expo pathway therefore requires Colin's participation; no 2027 stage, venue, date, inventory or price should be treated as available until a current prospectus is supplied.

## Strategic opportunity assessment

A credible partnership test would use useful content rather than a broad brand message. Potential public formats include a neutral evidence explainer, a practical decision checklist, a clearly sourced scorecard, an accessible digital companion or a results follow-up that reports aggregate engagement.

A content-to-event pathway could connect:

1. A clearly classified magazine article or advertising placement.
2. A short URL or QR code to an accessible online resource.
3. An optional demonstration or seminar at a future Expo.
4. Measurement of scans, completed journeys, voluntary follow-ups and repeat participation.
5. A later article reporting aggregate results and lessons.

No reader or attendee data should be assumed to be available. Any contact capture requires explicit consent, a clear privacy statement, a defined data owner and an agreed retention period.

Do not publish a CPM based on publisher-supplied readership. For internal decision-making, calculate cost per thousand only after the insertion order fixes the actual price and the publisher supplies a verified delivered-copy denominator. Keep negotiated pricing in the password-protected meeting record.

A minimum campaign report should contain print run, delivered copies, retail returns, the pass-along method, digital-edition unique users, engaged time, separate advert and editorial QR/UTM scans, scorecard starts and completions, voluntary opt-ins, completed referrals and cost per engaged visitor.

## FFS scorecard and editorial recommendation

The first short-form article is too constrained for a defensible ranking. The best first treatment is a neutral explainer such as **“Five questions to ask before trusting a retirement-service score”**, supported by a short URL or QR code to the full methodology, evidence dates, category definitions and correction process.

A later scorecard or awards feature should proceed only with:

- published criteria and weighting;
- a dated evidence cut-off;
- right of reply for assessed organisations;
- a correction and appeal route;
- separation of award sales, advertising spend and score;
- clear sponsored-content disclosure and political neutrality;
- no political forecasting, party advocacy or personality claims as evidence of scoring authority.

## Evidence and brand guardrails

- Label all readership, demographic and attendance figures as publisher- or organiser-supplied until independently audited.
- Do not describe John as owner, publisher or editor without confirmation.
- Confirm the preferred surname spelling because public sources use both Emmanuel and Emanuel.
- Confirm whether John or Colin holds final Probus-facing commercial authority and include Colin in any publishing or Expo decision.
- Distinguish advertising, advertorial and independent editorial.
- Require sources, dates and transparent criteria for any scorecard or comparison content.
- Avoid political endorsement, party preference or claims of predictive authority.
- Do not imply endorsement by Probus, the Retirement Villages Association, Clubs New Zealand or any distribution partner.
- Treat future Expo dates, prices and inventory as unconfirmed until the current prospectus is supplied.
- Do not use the kit's Roy Morgan print-preference statements or conflicting investment threshold until the underlying evidence is supplied.
- Require a signed insertion order and current audience evidence schedule to override inconsistent promotional material.

## Unresolved public questions

1. What is the audited or traceable print circulation behind the 172,900 readership estimate?
2. How are online readers, page views and repeat readers defined and deduplicated?
3. Who has final authority over sponsored editorial, independent editorial and digital reuse?
4. What disclosure label is applied to advertiser-supplied content?
5. Are 2027 Expo dates, venues, exhibitor prices, speaking opportunities or sponsorship packages confirmed?
6. What outcome reporting can be supplied without disclosing reader or attendee personal information?
7. Which surname spelling does John prefer for current public use?
8. Can the publisher supply current print, delivery, return, digital-analytics and pass-along evidence?
9. Which dates govern booking, copy, final artwork, proof, corrections, cancellation and publication?
10. What disclosure will appear on the bundled editorial, and does SNZ retain final proof and correction rights?
