## What's Happening?

The Government's Budget 2026 funds a major upgrade to the **SuperGold Card**. For the first time, you'll be able to use your SuperGold Card as an **official form of photo identification** — just like a passport or driver licence.

**Cost:** FREE — the upgrade is optional and at no charge.
**Who qualifies:** Anyone aged 65+ who has or gets a SuperGold Card.
**Availability:** Expected from **October 2028**.

---

## Why This Matters

Many older New Zealanders (estimated **180,000+ people**) do not have a passport or driver licence. Without official photo ID, you can be locked out of:

- 🏦 Banking services (opening accounts, verifying identity)
- ⚖️ Legal services
- 🛒 Some commercial transactions requiring ID
- 🏢 Accessing government services that need identity verification

If you've stopped driving or don't travel overseas, the SuperGold Card upgrade will solve this problem for free.

---

## What the Upgraded Card Includes

- ✅ A **photograph** on the card
- ✅ **Enhanced security features** to prevent fraud
- ✅ Meets standards required by **banks and other service providers**
- ✅ Available as a **physical card AND a digital version** (on your phone)
- ✅ **Free of charge** — Minister Casey Costello: "Older New Zealanders should not have to pay just to prove who they are"

---

## Do You Have to Upgrade?

**No.** The photo ID upgrade is entirely **optional**. If you're happy with your existing card without a photo, you can keep using it as normal — it will still give you free off-peak public transport and all your usual discounts and concessions.

## What You Can Do Now (Interim Solution)

If you need photo ID right now, you can visit your **nearest AA office** and have a photo added to your existing SuperGold Card. This is an interim measure available immediately.

---

## Existing Benefits You Keep

Even without the upgrade, your SuperGold Card still gives you:

- 🚌 **Free off-peak public transport** (buses, trains, ferries — varies by region)
- 🏪 **Discounts and concessions** at thousands of businesses nationwide
- 💰 **Rates rebates** (local government rates relief for eligible holders)
- 👂 **Hearing aid subsidies** (through some DHB/Health NZ programmes)

The photo ID upgrade is a NEW feature — nothing is being taken away.
