Short Summary
Check whether you qualify for NZ Super and targeted help with housing or long-term care. Each payment has its own residence, needs or financial criteria; assistance is not automatic.
Steps & Guidance
- 1
Apply for NZ Super
You can apply up to 12 weeks before turning 65. Check Work and Income's eligibility rules, including residence and physical presence. Required years depend on your birth date and include five years after age 50; overseas agreement and other special rules may apply.
- 2
Assess Accommodation Supplement eligibility
Ask Work and Income about help with rent, board or eligible home ownership costs. Eligibility depends on your circumstances, including income, assets and accommodation costs; it does not cover rent for public or social housing.
- 3
Understand the Residential Care Subsidy
Start with a Health NZ-funded NASC needs assessment for indefinite long-term residential care. Complete MSD's financial means assessment if required for your circumstances. Eligible care must be contracted, and Health NZ pays the subsidy directly to the care provider.
- 4
Check SuperGold concessions and rates rebates
Check SuperGold business offers and local off-peak public transport conditions. Apply separately to your council for a rates rebate: it is assessed each year against household income, rates and other criteria. SuperGold cardholders have a different income limit, but holding the card does not guarantee a rebate.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
- Failing to tell Work and Income about changes to relationships, living arrangements or other circumstances that may affect NZ Super or other assistance.
- Assuming gifts or sales below market value remove assets from a Residential Care Subsidy assessment. Ask MSD how the rules apply before relying on a transfer.
Documents & Info to Prepare
- The income, asset and housing-cost evidence requested for the payment you are applying for.
- Identity and residence evidence required by Work and Income; check the relevant application checklist.
